WHY COATED FOAM

Soft form.
Hard-working surface.

Quinze & Milan shapes foam into clean, architectural volumes and finishes it with one continuous elastic coating. No seams, no stitching — just a smooth, uninterrupted surface that gives the furniture its distinctive character.

For architects and interior designers, coated foam offers a different approach to traditional upholstery or standard contract seating. A piece can sit quietly within an interior or become a defining element of the space.

It also makes sense to consider coated foam early in the design process. It can help shape a waiting area, break-out zone, museum route or hospitality space from the first sketches, rather than simply being added at the end.

MATERIAL QUALITIES

01

Seamless

The coating follows every curve and edge without visible stitching, creating a continuous surface that works particularly well for sculptural seating and modular configurations.

02

Colour-led

Colour is an integral part of the design. It can define a zone, introduce a brand colour into an interior, or bring calm and coherence through a single monochrome piece.

03

Repairable

Furniture in public spaces has to deal with intensive daily use. Local damage can often be assessed and repaired on site, helping to extend the useful life of the furniture rather than replacing it unnecessarily.

OUR COLOUR PALETTE

A starting point for colour.

Our standard palette is a curated selection of colours for Quinze & Milan coated foam furniture.

For projects, we can also work with RAL and NCS references. If the colour you need falls outside our standard range, additional colours can be developed on request.

Before production, we can produce project-specific samples for approval, allowing you to evaluate the finish alongside the actual materials, lighting and atmosphere of the space.

IN USE

Coated foam furniture for public spaces.

Our coated foam furniture is used in places where people gather, wait, work and move through a building — museums, universities, workplaces, hospitality, retail, healthcare and cultural spaces. Environments where furniture needs to become part of the architecture while standing up to intensive daily use.

The same principle applies to both our collections and project work. A standard piece brings the recognisable Quinze & Milan language into an interior, while a bespoke piece can translate a specific brief into its own scale, rhythm, colour or seating configuration.

FROM IDEA TO SURFACE

One continuous design process.

Coated foam is not simply about applying a finish. Form, comfort, foam, coating and colour all need to work together from the beginning. Foam density, radius, silhouette and surface treatment are considered as part of one design process.

This applies whether we are developing a collection piece or a custom seating solution. Early technical input helps resolve details before production and ensures that form, proportions and finish are appropriate for the way the furniture will actually be used.

Made for the project.

Our collections are a proven starting point. Primary, Room 26 and other Quinze & Milan pieces can be used as they are or become the starting point for a wider interior concept. For larger installations and bespoke applications, SDC lab works alongside us on colour, technical assessment and custom development.

The first step is a conversation about the project: where the furniture will be used, how intensively it will be used, quantities, colour requirements and whether a standard piece or a custom solution is the right approach.

We can also consider practical aspects such as cleaning, circulation, repair access, colour consistency, delivery timing and how the furniture works alongside the other materials in the space.

Questions

What is coated foam furniture?

Coated foam furniture is seating or spatial furniture shaped in foam and finished with a continuous elastic coating. The process creates soft, sculptural volumes with a seamless coloured surface instead of a conventional upholstered cover.

Where is coated foam furniture used?

It is commonly specified for cultural, educational, healthcare, hospitality, workplace, retail and other shared interiors where form, colour, comfort and intensive use all matter.

Can Quinze & Milan make custom coated foam furniture?

Yes. Quinze & Milan collections can be used as a starting point, and project-specific coated foam furniture can be developed with SDC lab when a space requires a particular scale, colour direction, configuration or technical assessment.

Can the coated foam surface be repaired?

Local damage can often be repaired. The appropriate method depends on the product, finish and extent of the damage, so each case should be assessed before treatment.

How do I specify colours and finishes?

Contact Quinze & Milan with the collection, quantity, location, intended use and colour direction. We will confirm suitable options and any project-specific requirements before production.
